Robotic Machining Cuts Part Lead-Time From Months To Days |

Subtractive processes, often referred to as CNC machining, have not stood still in the rapid prototyping arena. Faster tool path generation is just one of the newer developments enabling machining to play a strong role in the rapid prototyping and direct digital manufacturing arena. Now, robotic machining has the potential to significantly affect the rapid casting arena, especially in the area of large castings. Tooling costs as well as lead times increase dramatically as parts get larger.

Motion Control or Mechatronics, What’s in a Name? |
Are we talking about Motion Control? or are we talking about Mechatronics?
Words are important in describing reality and communicating with others. The term Mechatronics was coined a few years ago, possibly from the frustration that the term Motion Control does not adequately cover the subject. It is, however, a made up word. And as a result, its real meaning is somewhat controversial.

The word mechatronics was first coined by a senior engineer of a Japanese company; Yaskawa, in 1969, as a combination of "mecha" of mechanisms and "tronics" of electronics and the company was granted the trademark rights on the word in 1971.
